Literacy

Reading is an essential skill for academic success and personal growth. As a student, developing strong reading habits can significantly enhance your comprehension, retention, and ability to engage with complex materials across various subjects. Recognizing the importance of reading, this student's reading aptitude and support from Swallow aim to provide a structured approach to cultivating growth in reading while improving overall academic performance.

At Swallow, our method of assessing a student's progress in reading centers on several tools. We use an AIMSweb + screening tool to assess students' readiness and progress in grades 4K through grade 3. Star Early Literacy and Star Reading are also tools used to assess students' progress in grades 1 through 8.

When students need additional support, each student is provided with an individualized reading plan written for them with tools and supports to assist their reading growth. Parents are notified if their child is given a reading plan.

Per guidance from the Wisconsin Department of Instruction, information on Act 20 can be found below.  As Swallow updates District instructional practices and resources to align with Act 20, additional resources will be added.
